Since my iPhone 4, now an iPhone 6+, I have had this issue.

The "direction indicator" when following map directions (Google Maps or Apple Maps), instead of paralleling the road, points off to the right about 35-40 degrees.

The astronomy programs (e.g. Sky guide or SkyView) similarly do not point at the object I have searched for, but instead the iPhone must be pointed about 30 degrees down and to the left.

Is there a way to troubleshoot this, or some experience with the same issue? Thanks.

Have you tried compass calibration under Location Services?

General --> Privacy --> Location Services --> System Services --> Compass Calibration

(if it's disabled, you can enable it, let it do it's thing, and disable it again; if it's enabled, disable it and renable it again)

Well. THAT was simple. Thank you, it looks ok now. I'll have to try it when the stars come out.
