iPhone 11 Pro Max Mark as Unread iMessages

To confirm, iOS still does not have an option for marking a message (iMessage or Text), as unread, right?

Is there any alternatives? Often, I'd read a message on my iPhone, but decide to reply to it later (when I have time).
But, all too often, I might be working on something else, and totally forget to respond.

Correct, there's no option and I don't know what an alternative is. I'd use reminders or some other reminder app to remind you to respond to text messages.

This feature is something that I was badly hoping for with iOS 14. Fingers crossed for a future iteration.

I read them through the notifications center sometimes to keep them marked unread

If your Force Touch or now Haptic Touch, you can see the thread without marking the message as read. This must be done from the Message app, not Notification Center or screen as this will mark them as read.
