Apple News led me to an update on a scandal from 1997:

Teacher Mary Kay Letourneau was married to Vili Fualaau, who she first took up with when she was 34 and he was a 12-year-old in her 6th grade class. They had two children together and she ended up in jail. When Mary Kay got out of jail, they married and have been together ever since. They filed for a separation in 2017 but reconciled and stayed together.

Now People Magazine says they are headed for divorce. In the article, People quotes a source as saying "They really gave it the old college try." But given Vili's age when they started "dating," I think it should have said "They really gave it the old middle school try."

Definitely one of the weirder gossip stories.

I remember when the story first came out and it was quite the scandal at the time
Usually these kinds of things make an initial splash and then fade away, but this one kept on enduring

Thanks for the update @Doctor Q

Their relationship survived prison time and they have been married over 14 years (together over 20)
Raised 2 daughters together that are in college

I'd say they did better than a lot of marriages have done in spite of their obstacles and challenges

You think it's OK for a Teacher to date and have sex with their 14 yo student?

Nope, never said that or even implied that
She's 57 and he is 35 now though
And in spite of their beginning, they made it work and last a lot longer than many with far less issues

So Pedophilia is ok when "it ends well" ??
That "Logic" is twisted!!

So if a Male teacher had sex with your teen Daughter as long as they "Made it Work" it's ok Now??

You are really working hard to make **** up, but you do you

Seems like the Bottom line is:

I believe that what that teacher did was reprehensible/inexcusable.

You think/believe whatever you want-No Skin off my back.

Conversation Over!!

Have a Great Life!!

[doublepost=1554492267][/doublepost]I just Googled Mary Kay and she hasn't aged particularly well. As the old saying goes, it's not the years, it's the miles...

From an interesting article about May-December marriages:

At least Mary Kay didn't blame it all on the student, as this other teacher did. This teacher's story doesn't even make sense, since she claimed there was no relationship but that the student had blackmailed her about revealing it.

When I got married, I was 26 and my wife was 21. We've been married for nearly 28 years.
They didn't factor in the age at which you get married, which is probably also important. You were 24% older than your wife when you got married, so that was a non-trivial difference in life experience. Now you are only 10% older, so you're even better matched.

You did fine (congrats!) but the risk of an age difference risk would have been practically nonexistent if you had been 76 and your wife 71 when you got hitched. When you get to those ages you'll be only 7% older than she is.
