I'd like to get some opinions on whether it would be wise to use a 2.4 GHz MBP to convert a bunch (a hundred or so) of family video DVD's to MP4s.

I'm not excited about running it through so many heat cycles to 170 deg since it doesn't have big heat sinks and fans blowing across them. If it's not hard on it, I'll do it. I'm just concerned about shortening its life.

My other computer is a 6 year old Gateway. I have no problem stressing it out, I don't care so much if I fry it. But who makes a good quality converter for it like Handbrake?

I have converted lots of video on my MBP using iSquint or VisualHub. It does get hot and you will hear the fans kick in, but so what? Thats what it/they are supposed to do!

Just make sure you give the fans space at the back and that you dont leave it in in a really, really, really hot room.

I have been running 6-8 hours of visual hub mp4 conversions for months almost every night while I am sleeping. No problems so far.

I prop the machine up for good ventilation though. (Macbook Air)
