How to deal with it in a timely manner transfering to itunes from a external hard drive collection which is a true mess. Good mp3 files just unorganized. Something on the order of 100 gb. Multiple file names, running song lists, as well as duplicates. Help.
My itunes account lives on a HP windows 8 machine (which my wife and I hate). I have a ipod 64 gb, and a ipad 64gb, and not quite ready to purchase a rMBP, or a MBA just yet.

You organize first, then deal with the transferring afterwards. If you don't deal with it now, it's not going to get any easier later

It's not hard to do. I would say starting from scratch with a clean library, and then moving your music back, and cleaning them up album by album, will give you good results.

I took your advice and started from scratch using a split screen and doing a quick review of each file. I'm approaching from an artist list instead of artist album listing. Just a running list under each artist and deleting songs I'll never listen to. I've renamed each file removing the preceding number so it can be arranged in alphabetical order for quick review. I'm up to 1000 songs but have a very long ways to go. Thank you for suggesting what should have obvious to me.

If files are good, iTunes will organize. Rename, organize into folder structure automatically based on tagging. Just tell it to consolidate library.

Thanks for the tip. I still need the files organized on my external hard drive as well.

It's been a long time since I've been excited about sorting thru my music files, but this does have me motivated and I'm looking forward as you said to get it done.
