My apologies for going right to a question for my first post.

I've been happy enough with my iPad 2 but there's just one thing that really bothers me - the iPad does not seem to have a proper master volume control that mutes the entire device and every sound it makes. Instead, the volume rocker and in-app controls only control the volume for the individual app you're using or the springboard; switch to another app and the volume reverts to whatever you set the app to last time.

Even with headphones. I might be watching something in a library and decide to take out my headphones and watch it silently - woe is me if I forget what volume the player was at before I put the headphones in though, because regardless of muting it with them plugged in, pull out the headphones and the volume will go right back to the previous volume, usually blasting music in a quiet classroom if I'm not careful.

Not even muting through settings it really mutes it. Video playback and certain system sounds still play.

I see the logic somewhat of having individual app volume. But this is a real problem whenever I'm using the iPad somewhere quiet, because the only way to keep it quiet is to frantically hammer the volume rocker down while switching apps, and sometimes that doesn't work because volume often varies when switching app menus or media. The other solution is to permanently plug in headphones or go through every app I might use that day and quiet them down.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a rant, it really isn't supposed to be - does anyone know of a solution to this, say a setting I missed or an app that can properly disable the volume? The people around me in the classroom would really appreciate it as would I.

Many thanks :) The iPad is quite an important tool for my Chinese study.
