So I was really hoping for a matte option for the retina macbook pro's, but it seems it's not to be. boo

So while after market anti glare films do exist, they sort of go against the point of having retina in the first place.

Now, it's probably not possible, and almost certainly a terrible idea.... but could the glass be removed on the rMBP display, similar to the macframe setup on the 27" TD's?

In order for Apple to make the rMBP thin the glass isn't held in place with magnets. Apart from that there are less layers of glass compared to the cMBP. In short there wont be an easy fix like the one you posted. Your only option till now is by applying an anti glare film.
