Mavericks and my Mid-2010 MBP lots of ??

I am sorry if this question has been asked.

I have a mid-2010 MBP 15" with 4 gb RAM and 500GB hard drive. Just bought a 2013 MBA with 8gb RAM and 256 SSD.

This past weekend, updated MBA with Mavericks.

Question:
Should I simply back up my MBP and update to Mavericks? I am running current SNOW OS. I don't have much on the computer etc. ONly using 40gb of the space.
Should I think about adding more RAM before updating? Should I think about putting a 256 SSD in it? Too many questions.

I know too much power for what I use it for.... Safari, Excel and Word, Turbo Tax etc.

I would search and read more about some of the "situations" people have had regarding Mavericks.

I had so many problems after installing it, that I had to take my computer to Apple Genius for repair. My MBPro had absolutely no problems until Mavericks was installed. Now I am going back to Snow Leopard. I think at the very least you should wait for the Mavericks update. Otherwise, remember the old adage if it's not broken don't fix it. Good Luck to you.
