Mavericks is burning my MBP

I updated my MBP 2009 with MV from ML. Dint do ac clean install. Since the update i have been facing a lot of issues. Firstly the battery. On ML i use to get around 3.5 hrs (Using VLC for HD movies) of battery life but since updating the battery life has gone to less than 2 hrs (even in browsing). I have updated all the apps from Mac Store. Even when the lid is closed(i.e in sleep mode) the battery drains a lot. On ML, during sleep the battery drain was around 10-12% for 12 hrs but now in MV the MBP shuts in 12 hrs. After shutting down the battery remains charged. The 2nd issue is the temperate. Since the update, the fans don't go above 3500 rpm even when the temp. crosses 75*c. I have to manually increase the speed using iStat Menu. It seems as if the fans don't want to increase beyond 3500 rpm and sometimes it doesn't increase above 2000 rpm.
