I am trying to understand how Mavericks uses RAM. I have an MBP with 8GB of memory and Mavericks 10.9.5.

Activity Monitor currently reports 7.99 GB of memory used, 8.82 GB of virtual memory and a swap of about 265 MB.

If I look at the list of processes and the memory used, I cannot account for the memory usage. The top 4 processes account for 989 MB, the remaining processes are below 100MB each, with most the processes below 10MB. Where is the rest of the memory.
