Using Etekcity Infrared Thermometer, aiming center near G, H keys, and center bottom, 50% brightness:

Max (32g, 24c, 2tb):

run1:
top: 94 - 99F, then constant at 95F
bottom: 90-93F
battery: 96%
time: 14 min

run2:
top: 97F, then constant at 94F
bottom: 88-93F
battery: 92%
time: 20 min

Pro (32g, 16c, 2tb):

run1:
top: 89-93, then constant at 93
bottom: 88-89F
battery: 97%
time: 16 min

run2:
top: 90-93
bottom: 88-93F
battery: 96%
time: 22 min

Looks like the max spikes up higher and then normalizes near 1-2F of the Pro, not sure what is causing that. Thoughts?
Battery appears to be close as everyone is reporting 5-10% difference non-GPU bound load.
I prefer the keyboard on the Max a little more, a bit more resistance, perceived travel.

I didn't record FPS or ms response, because they were about the same and this game is CPU and network intensive, not GPU.
I believe when I did the same test on a cooling pad they were near identical top and bottom. I might do that test again since that's how I usually play it.

Cooling pad w/ feet, plugged in:

Max:
top: 90-93F
bot: 81-83F

Pro:
top: 85-88F, then after a while it snuck up to and constant 89-90.5F
bot: 79-82F

I think that if you want a cool lap the keyboard/top case temp is less important, and the bot temps are really close with the cooling pad.

Is the battery percentage count after run 1 AND 2 or did you restart at 100% each run?

If yes it is not a 5-10% gap but 100% (pro goes down 4% and max 8%)

i restarted at 100%, the laptop was charging when playing on the opposite one. So good point, though thorough battery testing should consider further away from 100% starting point. By the way, if I played this game on battery on the intel 16" it would die halfway through a second game.

I'm going to do another test that is:
50% brightness
spotify running
slingtv running
python math running on all cpu cores
on battery

and then measure battery and top/bot temps again

something interesting, on the max the 10 python processes show as pinned at 98.6-99.4, and under the prov it's 85.2-88.7. not sure why the max is working "harder", but I'm not tracking how many iterations (it set to a high value and will quit after 60 min).

continues to be about -7% less bat for the max.

i pulled the plug on the sling experiment because i had more tabs open on the max.
I also killed the python code, interesting when i took temp of the bottom after killing it they were identical bot temp. So spotify only same bot temp.

I totally don't get the purpose of this at all. Max temp, about body temperature? trackpad a mild summer day? Honestly, this sounds like the dumbest test anyone ever ran

79% , 87% bat (max,pro) starting point
only py test (no spotify or slingtv)
pro starts at 99 - 99.8 cpu for each core, then slows into the 96-97 range.
there is almost no difference to 1-2F degrees on top or bot temp after 5 minutes.
holding steady at 8% so I think the tabs difference earlier sapped battery.

"Max" refers to this configuration "Max (32g, 24c, 2tb)".
I am used to using the m1 air directly on my lap, which was cool to warm, and I'd like to see which 16" is closer to that experience. Also feel free to unsubscribe to my newsletter. (shrug)

when i add sling, the top runs 3 to 5F+ and bot 1 to 2F+, on the max.

Great post. This part I was like huh? Is there actually a keyboard difference between the M1 Pro and M1 Max models? o.o

Yikes, I get that MacBooks are trash for gaming. But League of Legends is such a low requirement game that this is a pretty pathetic showing for a $3000+ laptop.

yea, there is a slight difference in key press between the two computers i'm testing, not suggesting there is a general difference in these two models. and it is very subtle.

Curious about battery usage comparison when both MacBooks run in Low Power mode, under identical load.
