maximal resolution of 15 inch MBP late 2008

hi all,
i wanted to ask if some of you know which resolution the late 2008 MBP supports? i'd like to connect a 22'' display via DVI and set the resolution to 1680x1050. However i'm afraid to harm the video chip with that high resolution since i'm not sure whether its supported or not.
does anyone of you use an external monitor with this resolution? or does anyone know what the maximum is?

You cannot harm the chip, because the software will figure out what the maximum your screen supports and allow you to do that. The video card is likely capable of a resolution, you can only dream of, which is: 2560x1600
