My battery is pretty well worn and i'm looking for a new one from either apple of a 3rd party. I want one better than the original battery my macbook pro came with though to give the maximum duration possible. The latest ones are about 7.5hrs (advertised - do they last anything like that in real life?). I can't remember my late 2008 lasting any more than 2hrs in reality.

Can I only get the standard apple replacement with the same battery life as I originally got or are there other options?

Cheers,
Pete

Since 2009 Apple used non-user-replaceable batteries in its MacBook Pros, which are bigger than the user replaceable battery in your 2008 MBP, thus have more capacity and have a longer battery life.
You cannot use one of those newer batteries with your MBP, you need to get a compatible one, like the one Apple sells here.

Thanks for the info. Are these any good? Only 'up to' 8% more life apparently but better than nothing

I wouldn't trust or recommend any non-Apple battery, due to the number of problems reported with "knockoff" batteries. Also, there is no assurance that knockoff batteries have the same charging technology that Apple uses, involving the battery, the MagSafe adapter and the Mac's logic board.
