So, the Apple website states that it can take 8GB of RAM, but the Crucial scanner tells me it can take 16GB and shows the available sticks.

Apple made it, but Crucial know what they are doing.

So what's the dealio?

I have 16 in mine. Working great.

8GB SO-DIMMS were prohbitively expensive at the time. Since Apple didn't sell the model with more than 8GB, then they wrote the spec sheet with that in mind.

Ah, so they were saying that 8GB was the most THEY were prepared to ship it with, not what it could handle.

Strange marketing, why undersell its performance capabilities?

early 2011 mbp 13" user here. 16 gb of ram, working perfectly. Have G.Skill ram installed.
