Im looking into buying a monitor for my new 2011 15" and i havent decided between 1920x1080 , 2560x1440 or some other HD resolution. But before i decide on that, how well can my mac manage that high of a resolution? Can my mac handle any of these resolutions? or am i being unrealistic? Could it handle it in clamshell mode only? Im really confused on this! i have the HD glossy on my mac so is x1056 the highest signal i can send out to another monitor or can i handle something higher?

Please and thank you!!!!!!:)

I don't know what "x1056" is, but the maximum resolution for an external display according to Apple is 2560 x 1600 pixel.

"x1056" is the resolution of the HD option in the 15" display i cant remember what the first numbers are i think its like 1905x1056 or something. anyways, so youre saying that if i paid for a 2560x1600 display i wouldnt have to reduce the resolution to something lower? and that my mac would be able to play movies at this resolution?

The 15-inch MBP has a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. The highest currently supported resolution via an external display is 2560x1600, and no, you'll have no problems playing movies on a monitor with that resolution. You won't have to reduce that (unless you're playing video games) for more normal everyday activities.
