My friend just had a new WD Scorpio Blue 1TB drive put into her 2006 Late 13" Mac Book with 1GB RAM. The computer immediately started running slower..no other changes or additions.
The system appears to be running clean. As apps are added, specially Firefox it gets slower still. With 1GB RAM it's no wonder, so I know she can get better performance with more memory but I'm certainly not sure the memory will help the overall speed of the machine that she saw decrease after the WD swap. There was a little bit more than 1GB of page outs but strangely enough 512Mb available. This still tells me the machine would like memory but still.. the change after the 1TB was installed is the mystery. I need to do an error log to see if the drive has physical problems but the machine isn't at hand at the moment.
Do the 1TB's put some extra demand on a system as far as buffer sizes. I saw there could be issues with a machine not really running at the 3Ghz speed of the Scorpion but running at 1.5GHz or something like that, and that was with a 2009 MBP. So I'm figuring if a newer MBP can have problems with a drive this size then never mind a late 2006 MB.
I've also seen a witches brew of answers as far as how much memory the 2006 late 13" MB can take. Official docs say 2 GB but I've also seen it said that you can put two 2GB chips in but the machine will only register 3.3GB (or so) But it runs fine. I also saw some one put a 1GB ad 2GB together but they said it was slower than 2x2gb's. Can anyone confirm or deny this.
We're in rural Guatemala and the drive was put in back in the US so going back to the store it was done at isn't an option .. an option that would normally be my first suggestion.
Thanks in advance.
