I just purchased this for backing up personal files.
I had no problem setting it up on my Imac

I used Time Machine and noticed, when switched ON, it backs up whatever folder you select.
I switched it to OFF as I can imagine how quickly it would fill my Maxtor hard drive even though it is 1T

Here is my question:
When I turn off the Imac, it appears the Maxtor switches off, however every now and then the green light on it goes on again and I hear the drive running
This happens every ten minutes or so
The only way I can stop this is to take out the power lead

Hope you can help me to stop the drive becoming active even though my Imac is shut down

Hmm, I've never used a Maxtor drive before, but I can't see why that would be the case. Perhaps someone else could address that question.

However, contrary to what you think, it will take a very long time to fill a 1 TB hard drive with Time Machine. Time Machine only backs up files that have been changed, so the initial backup will be pretty large but subsequent backups are very small. I have a 160 GB main partition in my iMac, and my 250 GB backup drive is only half full.
