Maxtor 80 GB external HD problem~

I was trying to hook up my External HD to my imac, at first the icon came up and I could open it, then an error came up and the icon dissapeared off of the desktop. I took out the firewire, unpluggeed, restarted it, shut it down then started it up again but the icon won't appear on my desktop???????
