I have a Maxtor One Touch II external HD that hasn't been functioning but I need some files from it. When I power it on I can hear a slow clicking noise. Should I open the external casing and hook up the HD as a secondary HD on another desktop? What other methods are there? Thanks in advance!

If you value your data, you should _always_ keep backups of it.
Even so, unplug the drive! The more you use it the less chance you have of recovering files from it. Then, either go to a specialist (very expensive) or try some software, irc DiskWarrior is a good one.
