I have had a maxtor 500gb external hard drive for some time now formatted on a mac os extended journaled partition. I recently installed a new desk and required a USB 2.0m extension cable which i installed. With the extension installed, when i open disk utility it says "1.09TB Maxtor Basics Desktop Media" where before it only said 500+gb. I didn't understand so i unplugged and plugged back in and i still said this, so i decided to format the existing 500gb partition and changed it to a full 1TB and it all seems fine. I haven't tried copying files over 500gb yet because the HD is currently empty as I'm using it as a time machine backup.
Don't know if this is a dumb question of not, please help.
