Apple has years of gray aluminum casted devices so production problems seem unlikely to be the reason for the shortage. I am starting to think maybe the Space Gray (even though an attractive watch) was not the eye catcher Apple wanted in the wild to start. This new part of business has all kinds of fashion marketing methodologies being sprayed all over it by the new retail guru. The SS with a white strap that TC was wearing on stage was surely test marketed and decided for a reason. A white strap grabs attention a gray watch with black strap does not at a distance of more than a foot. Even though gray has been a consistently more demanded color with previous with iDevices, the white strapped watches will create a larger forcefield of curiosity and envy. Isn't is how fashion marketing works? Get ready for Fendi and Gucci Apple watch straps!

Nope. Ship-through numbers, and their associated revenue targets, trump individual marketing tactics every time.

Trickling product out does not help the bigger marketing goal of seeing "Apple Watch Launch Day: 5 million watches shipped, 3.5 billion dollars in revenue, and millions of deliriously happy customers" splashed across every media outlet.

Every company wants to sell a gazillion of everything but that does not explain how such a sophisticated supply chain could ever miss forecasting numbers for the historically most in demand color in a new product. So then why the miss?

Someone got in touch with Apple Online Store executive relations earlier today, and they mentioned that there were "specific issues" with 38mm SG sports. We have no way of knowing how accurate this is, but supply chain issues would seem to make sense given the patterns we are seeing?

I did see that thanks. It is weird that gray has never been a problem until now.
