I just started looking at the Air’s and was wondering if there are any availability problems with getting a new MB Air with the M1 chip?

Are these currently available for purchase in-store?

I would check on Apple's website to see if a local store, assuming there is one, has any. I was able to order one last night for local pickup today.

Depends on your area but I was able to pick one up earlier this week with no problem

Stock gets updated every day in the morning in apple website. We only have pick up, can’t turn up at store without prepayment because we are on a national lockdown in England.

I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that my local Apple store, up here in Canada, had a bunch of errors with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB discs available for next day pick up, instead of waiting weeks for a configure to order model off the website.

I would recommend going through different options on the website to see what the availability is based on different models.

The stock is pretty good at local stores for the 2 default configs. There is less stock for the "ultimate" model (8/8/16/1TB) but I have still seen it at at least some local stores each morning. Any other custom order is backordered for a month.

Seems like Apple stores in Los Angeles are stocking 3 models:

Base Air (8gb ram/256gb ssd)
Air 8/8 (8gb ram/512gb ssd)
Air 8/8 (16gb ram/1tb ssd)

I'm really surprised that a 16/512 is BTO. Seems like it would be a popular configuration.

Seriously! In my opinion those should have been the 3 options:

8/256
16/512
16/2

Good, better, ultimate.

Looking at the shipping times for any BTO config with 16 GB of RAM, I have a feeling they are very constrained when it comes to the supply of RAM for the 16 GB option. It's not a typical laptop RAM part, it has to fit on the M1 SoC.

I picked up one of the last available 16/1 versions at the Manhattan Village store yesterday. Today, they're all out of stock of that config at all nearby stores for me in LA.

The shipping times for a BTO surprised me. Had me thinking Apple was extremely confident in 8GB's of RAM on an M1 being a huge step up from an Intel Mac...or like you mentioned, just constrained. I canceled my order for 8/256. I think I'll need 512, but torn on the ram. I use FCX.
