I have a MacBook Air that I'm working on for a friend. It can't boot to the desktop, though the HDD is not full and I've verified the disk in recovery mode.

Before erasing the drive, I'm curious if I can a) move its HDD into my 80GB iPod classic and b) possibly attempt accessing its data via the iPod if so.

Any clues on if this will work? Should I turn on disk mode on the iPod prior?

It should work. Start the iPod up in disk mode and you'll be able to access the Air's data.
