MB Audio Optical Input

I have my xbox 360 connected to my MB's optical input through optical to minijack. I thought that this would allow my macbook to play audio from my xbox 360. Is there a setting I have change in my macbook to get it to accept the sound output from the 360?
 
has no one been able to do this? i get a signal from the input when i check my sound input in system preferences but I dont know how to get that signal to play...
