MB Pro No Sound out of earphone Jack

I use my MBP primarily as a desktop replacement. All of a sudden the external speakers aren't working. My built in speaker are working fine.

When I plug the external speaker into my iphone they work great but not when working when connected to the Macbook Pro.

Is there any thing short of going thru Apple to figure this out?

I called Apple

and they walked me through the steps to make it work

power off >remove all peripherals > remove battery > hold down power button for 10 seconds > re-install battery> hold down APPLE/ALT/P/R hit power hold down for 4 cycles.

When it came back to life everything worked great!
