OS and apps?

There is an app called DaisyDisk that can assess the storage on your hard drive and find the culprit. It works great and has cool visualizations of disk usage.

No they are not, backups will be specified as backups not as other. Other is OS and program's that are not installed like apps (ie World of warcraft is filed under other)

In a nutshell: it's any other files that OS X's spotlight index does not recognise as Audio/Movies/Photos/Apps or Backups
