I bought a used, 2 month old M3 MBA back in November from a small business on eBay. It has the remainder of Apple's standard warranty until September 2025. I did a paid device check and it has not been reported stolen and it's not attached to any finance etc.

I'm now looking to sell it myself, but just a little bit concerned about how the standard warranty would work if the new buyer (who purchases it from me) has to make a claim, as I do not have the original proof of purchase (nor does, as expected, the business I bought it from).

I know with AppleCare+ (not the usual warranty), that Apple's terms state that may request the original proof of purchase. I've heard Apple is less strict on the standard warranty, and the warranty "is attached to the device, not the owner".

If they have to make a claim, are they likely to encounter issues without the original proof of purchase?
Do Apple staff routinely ask for proof of purchase?

Thanks

No, Apple doesn't ask for proof of purchase unless the consumer wants the warranty date adjusted.
Thanks. Ended up calling Apple and explaining, the customer service agent was very helpful and made it clear as long as it wasn't an old device that was suddenly activated then Apple would honor the limited warranty without needing proof of purchase.

It might depend on the country where it's being serviced; I've heard that (for example) India will require PoP sometimes. But in the USA, no issues - Apple's internal date of sale is all they need, at an Apple Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

In many countries with Consumer Law protection that protection wouldn't apply, but it doesn't for you anyway since you weren't the original purchaser. UK for example, Consumer Law only covers the original purchaser.

It might be related to where from device has been bought. If it is bought straight from Apple Store, then this problem should not occur, but if device has been bought from a reseller, then it is actually possible because it could have been in reseller stocks for some time.

I myself had this problem but it was easy to resolve with Apple support as device was bought as new and I had a proof of purchase with date on it - and yes it was bought from a reseller..
