Asking this question on behalf of my daughter. She has been using MBA for 6+ years and purchased a new MBA 2020 just about exactly one year ago. A week or so ago she went to close her lid and in the act of closing the lid her screen broke. I can't believe that she managed to break her display with the simple act of closing her laptop lid, and of course Apple isn't covering the damage since she didn't purchase AppleCare (hindsight is 20/20 LOL) . Are newer MBAs really that fragile that the act of closing the lid could somehow flex the display enough to break it? Just curious if this is a somewhat common occurrence or just an unlucky fluke for her.

No, there was probably some small debris in between the display and keyboard when she closed the lid. Displays don’t just crack themselves. Most of the stress is around the hinge area.

I will agree with the debris part, or even an object left there by accident (pen, pencil, phone, ruler, etcetera).

A while back, I had a user present me with a laptop, and stated, "I just opened the lid, and the screen was broken". Upon further investigation, and telling the user to just tell me what happened, it would make it easier for me to fix, he explained that he was travelling, and sat on his bag, while waiting for a flight. Ohhhhhhhhh

Honestly...!

I suspect your daughter accidentally closed the lid with something between the screen and the base. My daughter did the same thing with a pencil and cracked the screen.

The final cost to replace the screen was $452, less than what I figured to be honest.

I talked to my daughter again and when she was closing her laptop lid, she had her fingers over to the top of the lid and her thumb touching the screen towards the top. Where her thumb was is exactly where the screen broke and it happened before the lid was fully closed, so it had to be the force from her thumb on the screen that did it. I just told her to be more careful from now on and to not touch the screen at all if she can help it. :)
