So I have a MBA M1, if I connect my USB C to HDMI cable directly to the MBA my external screen works fine. If I connect the same USB C (to HDMI) cable to a USB C Hub (so the hub is connected to the MBA) the screen does not work.

If I connect a HDMI (to HDMI) cable to the Hub (which is connected to the MBA) the screen works.

I have tried both the Apple USB C Hub and an Anker Hub (which was recommended) so I doubt it is the hub. The MBA is on Ventura 13.5.2.

I don’t think all the usb-c port functionality is going to be available via the hub, and usb-c to hdmi is likely one of those limitations.

It won’t work because you’re trying to send two streams of video - one through the hub (even though there is no monitor connected) and one through the HDMI adapter cable. macOS only supports single stream transport.

You should try a basic USB-C hub that doesn’t have any kind of video output.

So even tho there is nothing plugged into the HDMI port on the hub the hub will not send video to the USB C port on the hub? Have I got that correct?

That sounds unusual, I would have thought a hub would be able to detect which port was in use and route to that.

While not ideal, I still think it makes sense that something like hdmi would need a direct connection in order to pass through. But I’m no expert.

If your setup still needs the extended connections a hub offers + a direct usb-c to hdmi connection you might want to look into a single port hub solution like this (not vouching for the one I linked to, just sharing an example I found on Amazon).

Simply put, plug the display directly
Everything else to the hub

My point is, if I plug HDMI into the hub it works, if I plug USB C into the hub it does not. Both are display.

I have it working (via HDMI into hub) it’s just a bit annoying without a really good reason. I can live with it I just wish it worked the way I wanted!!
