My external monitor can output 2560 x 1440p resolution, but I'm only getting 1920 x 1080p from when using a USB-C to HDMI cable connected to my MacBook Air M1.

I'm looking at buying a different cable. What specs do I need to ensure that the cable will allow a 2560 x 1440p resolution? Would any USB-C to DisplayPort cable do the job? Or do I need to make sure it says "4K support" on the box or something? Newbie here.

Yes, a USB-C to DP cable is a better choice. With HDMI, the signal needs to be converted. The USB-C port on MacBook carries the DP signal natively.
