Hi,

I got myself this USB Hub for the M1 Macbook Air.

Works great in principle, however when plugged in, the Macbook cannot connect via Wifi anymore

After wrapping the cable and the end of the hub in several layers of aluminum foil the Wifi is back. As the aluminum foil is not a pretty sight, I attached now a ferrite bead close to the USB Hub on the cable. The ferrite bead works almost as good as the foil.

When trying to understand the problem, I also checked the signal quality on the WRT Router and found that the MBA (without USB hub attached) has a worse signal than my Huawei phone, from the same position. Surprising! So, it seems to me that the MBA Wifi antenna construction is sub-optimal.

What are your experiences with the Wifi on the M1 MBA and interference from USB 3 sources? Any better remedy than ferrite beads?

BTW, I found that both USB-C ports are equally bad with the Hub and Wifi.

UPDATE:

I have upgraded now the firmware of the DD-WRT router and speed has gone up. Also the signal got much better. The Internet is fun again. The new router firmware also offers WPA3 which seems to work better than WPA2 with the MBA however the rest of our devices cannot do WPA3.

Cheers

Gerry
