Is there some variability among panels on the base models vs. higher-end configurations (or just variation in general)? I ask because I've been using a base 13" M4 16/256 and a 13" M3 24/512 and the screen on the M3 is better. I've gone through all the color profiles, turned off true tone, and have them both side-by-side with the same settings. The M3 is just better -- not that the M4 is "bad"--it's just obviously less crisp. I was wondering if Apple sources different panels for different models. The M4 is assembled in Vietnam while the M3 is assembled in China.

My guess would be just different suppliers. I’ve heard the same with iPhones. I suspect the one made in China would be of better quality.

Stopped by the Apple store to compare my M4 with the display units. Unfortunately, only the base 16/256 models were out. Couldn't notice a real difference, but they could all be using the same slightly worse panels. Off topic, the midnight base model was assembled in China and looked surprisingly good. I tried to smudge it and it seemed fairly resistant.

Tomorrow I'll take it to the Genius Bar along with the M3 to see if they'll shed any light on the situation. Not expecting much, but figured I'll do my due diligence before returning it.

Shed some light on it at the Apple Store. The "genius" could tell some of the modest differences right away. The M3 panel has a hint more warmth than the M4 -- this is both with the same color profile settings, true tone off, etc.

He also told me that Apple sources its panels from LG and Samsung and while all meet "spec" it's entirely possible there could be some slight differences.

Either way, the diagnostic testing on the M4 screen showed no issue--within spec. But my eyes clearly prefer one over the other.
