Yo! First time posting on here, though I've been a reader since '07. I run a 2007 MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa ed? I'm only showing 2GBs) w/ intel 2 duo core, 2.2 GHz processor, GEForce Nvidia 8600M GT (Gpu) graphics chip (128 MB) and no mods to anything. Nicknamed "Mac Attack" *I was running OS X Tiger 10.4.11 up until this afternoon, upgraded straight to Snow Leopard after backup/wiped HD. Clean Install, as far as I understood it.
My concerns are: a year ago my battery & power cord started flaking out, not under warranty & broke I waited a good 6 mo's to see Apple about a replacement, which they did FREE due to complaints on the issue. I had a new short term advertising job lined up & immediately put my MBP to work, running AI and PS and other CS3 programs simultaneously, as well as 4+ InterWebz tabs, which it seemed to dislike, but no errors just slow performance. Fast forward three months, I am no longer doing Graphics work currently, but i am getting screen glitches like purple bits and pixelated images shortly before freezing and sliding into Grey Screen o' Death (black box w: you need to ReStart in 5 languages). After research I decided to upgrade my OS, nOw that I knew I could hit SnowLeopard right off. Long story short (by now is that even possible lol?) I wiped after having My Guy "fix" it enough to turn on, and installed SnowL just this afternoon. First install froze up halfway through during SetUp(I believe the OS was fully installed, just not the Settings/Networks etc). Restarted (install disc still in drive) and looked great, new OS seemed clear as a bell! STOKED!!
Not so fast though lol, as I am filling in system preferences and syncing my iPhone a damn glitch pops up in the box containing my download, this time blue distortions. *Only in box. I immediately did another ReStart as iTunes 10 had just updated & I had heard there were problems w/it if you went from Tiger straight to SL. I was so SURE the OS was the problem, and that a Clean Install would totally Fix the Bugs.. In the past few hrs I haven't seen another glitch, but have yet to Migrate my Data back on, though I am importing 17GBs of iTunes as a tester. So far ok, but I'm really not asking it to do anything hard yet..
Is this something to do with my Nivdia Graphics Chip being neatly 4 Yrs old? I hear they crash after 2! *NO Trojans, I don't watch Porn and am a Nazi about downloads and suspicious links etc. I stopped using PCs as primary due to Pirated Software, all my *****'s Legit! I ran full diagnostics and Hardware Tests, everything says OK! My Graphic info is reading 16x for PCI, no error codes. My HD was about 110GBs of 120GBs full when I upgraded the OS. Only other thing I can think of is my Hard Drive is going? It just doesn't sound like I am seeing the same glitches that vid chip problems cause to appear (black screen blank and different color glitches than I see..
I'd really like to know if it's the LOgicBoard or HardDrive before I hassle with reinstalling CS3, Word AND my Data. ANYONE have advice or a similar issue??? I have an IT guy, leftover from my Techie PC days, but he's not Mac primarily and I fear he's simply scouring the forums just like I do to find ideas/suggestions... I can do that withOUT spending $80/hr lol..
I love, love, love my MBP and though i hope to add a MBP Air and possibly an iPad II to my Harem this year, I really wanted to keep this one as a primary for... well, FOREVER lol... Long Live the Mac Attack!
*sorry no screen shots or video, my camera broke and I immediately parted it out for my jewelry designs, while at the same time my Palm Pixi's camera (among other issues!) crapped out. I splurged on the iPhone, visions of syncing To Do lists, other apps/programs/data and Scanners (Oh My!) dancing in my head.. BUT, After its recent behavior, I'm kind of reluctant to even touch it...
Hmmm.. Now I know how my Husband feels after I had a weeklong Migraine lol! ;)
Thanks in advance, apologies for the Novella.
XO, ZB

GOTCHA NOW!  FWord-er just did it again, but I shut it down before it could Grey Screen.. Purple glitches caught on camera this time, as I happened to have it in my hands at the perfect time! Anyone seen this before? I doubt I'll even turn it back on until I know for sure what it is... B/C at least it's starting this time around! Pics linked below.

Your 8600 is probably dying :(

Read this page on Apple's website:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377

If you take it in to Apple, they will run a test and determine if it is the 8600GT or not - if it is, they will repair the machine even though it's out of warranty.

Good luck!

i have the same MBP as you and had some similar problems. Took it to apple and it was the nvidia gpu. Apple replaced it for free! which was awesome.

take it to apple and see what they say.

I have the same MBP and had the same glitchy graphics problem a few months ago. It was the graphics card, it's a known error, and Apple will repair it for you for free as jdreier said. They replaced my logic board in the Apple Store *while I waited*. Took about 45 minutes, and the machine has been working fine ever since.
