MBP 10.4. computer closed (assuming asleep) but still announcing the time

I have my computer set to announce the time.

It used to only announce the time when the screen was flipped up and I was using it.

and I would go to bed, and shut the screen and the time announcing would cease until I rewoke the computer.

I then began noticing my battery life going to sh** when not plugged in an the lid shut (assuming asleep)

then yesteday I noticed it started announcing the time with the lid shut.

I'm like, whoa, I thought the computer was asleep - how is it announcing the time?

looking for help figuring out this problem.
