Everywhere I've searched (e.g. everymac) states that the MBP 13 2012 (non-retina) is limited to 16GB of RAM (2x8GB SO-DIMMs).

But I see that Crucial is selling 16GB PC1600 DDR3L SO-DIMMs. Admittedly they're kind of pricey ($150 each), but it seems like they would fit.

Has anybody tried these? Any idea if they work, and if so, whether one could put in two and get 32GB memory in that system?

Thanks.

16GB is the limit.

How long have you been running your current machine with 16GB? Has it been a problem? I’m just wondering because I hate how everything is soldered now too, but if you’ve run it for 8 years without difficulty, it may very well be that you don’t really need more. At worst, could 32GB suit you for another 8 years? It’s a tricky question because it seems like mbp development took a pause for a few years, maybe in the next 8 years we’ll see much higher demands for RAM, impossible to say.

Thanks for the comment. I actually have a 2013 rMBP with 16GB as my main Mac. It's not a bad system, but the memory is soldered. Things get surprisingly tight once I start running Windows and Linux virtual machines. I don't really want a bigger laptop, so I was trying to see whether the older MBP would be a viable option.

Yeah, in that case, I don't see a way around just going for the 64 GB 16. If you're running a 15 inch now, should be a bit smaller and lighter.
