MBP 13" Extended Monitor

I am running an 19" SyncMaster monitor in extended mode with my MBP 13". I know when I had my old PC i was able to run the monitor at 75Hz over VGA to VGA connection. Why can't I run my monitor now at 75Hz over miniDisplayport to DVI?
