Would it be pointless to have a mbp 13 inch with a 12.9 iPad Pro? Or better off getting the 15 mbp to go along with the iPad?

Is kind of pointless. Normally you'd use an iMac and an iPad, powerful computer for the desk and powerful tablet for portability. You've chosen to have two portable options. However it really depends on what you intend to do with them, which you didn't state.

I move around a lot so don't want to haul a desktop computer, but I would like a powerful portable device. I do need the MACOS software as I cannot completely depend on IOS yet, but I would prefer a IPAD when I do travel around for work. I know its not the best financially choice!

What sort of work are you doing? If you're thinking of carrying a 12.9" iPad then you'd be just as fine carrying a 13" MBP around. It's essentially the same thing, just one is an actual computer.

I'd go with a Macbook Pro 15" with an iPad. I have the standard 9.7 inch version and found it to be the perfect size after comparison. Both of these suit my need perfectly for travelling. The 15 inch is still very portable for me and the screen is big enough to use it as my only screen if needed when travelling. It's also powerful enough that I don't feel limited. I still bring along my iPad for long trips and use it for watching and reading, especially during bedtime. Both complement each other quite well.

If you’re already set on the iPad 12.9 (as in, you already are committed to keeping it and have workflows set up for it), then I’d advocate the 15 inch. The portability gain of the 13 inch is kind of lost if you’re going to haul both a giant iPad and a laptop around, so you might as well get the 15 inch to give you better performance for the money and a bigger screen to be able to work more comfortably. And if you’re already used to taking the 12.9 around with you, I don’t think you’ll find the added bulk of the 15 inch (either together with the iPad or as an alternative) all that much more to handle.

i would like to choose MBP 13, it is the grateful size and the real keyboard is the essential.

I use a MBPro 13" and an iPad.

There is obviously overlap of capabilities, but they do different things. If I'm just chilling on the couch, eating some snacks, and watching some Netflix, I'm not using my MBPro. Sure, I could, but if I'm risking spilling stuff on my iPad or MBPro, it's obvious which one is the higher risk item. But then if I'm surfing MacRumors on my iPad and need write a semi-lengthy reply, that's not happening on my iPad. So I might open up the MBPro for a short while and use then, then switch back.

But as you said, you need macOS software, so you're limited there. Maybe it's an iMac and MacBook (non-pro) combo you need instead? That would cover you for macOS, and give you options for portability and horsepower.

There are obviously answers that are "wrong" but in terms of "right" answers you won't find that definitively from a couple of half-arsed paragraphs :) So yes, it might be pointless to have both. Or no, it might not be. It depends on your preferences and uses.

As a general rule though, I don't do any "real" work on my iPad. It's for surfing, reading, GarageBand etc. I know some people do some photo editing and real office tasks on iPad, but for me I'd much rather use a real laptop of desktop for that. Again, there is some significant overlap between the capabilities of the devices these days for sure.
