Hi there

Yet another MBP vs MBA topic! :p

I am looking to get either the basic 13" MBP or MBA (both £999 in UK)
I will be using it while away at college for:

Writing essays
Spreadsheets
Presentations
Listening to music / Watching videos from a portable HDD
General internet / e-mail
Uploading maybe 8Gb of photos when on holiday to clear memory card

I come home at weekends so a small and lightweight laptop would be good, but my current 2.5Kg/5.5Lb laptop isn't too bad
I have a Gaming PC for games at weekends and for photo editing... and my parents iMac

To me it seems that the MBA 13" would be fine, but the extra power of the MBP is tempting... what would you guys suggest?

Will

The MBA will be fine for you.

I thought so!

If I had enough cash for the new Retina MBP then I would have bought one yesterday, but real life got in the way!

I suppose if I am after a portable computer, I could get away with an iPad and a keyboard case for it :p

It's a shame that you didn't have the money, because it is absolutely brilliant! I bought one because I needed it for University (I didn't necessarily need the rMBP, but I really wanted it).

But the Air should be just fine for you.

Have a look at http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/06/faceoff-13-macbook-pro-vs-13-macbook-air/

Well, I decided to get the 13" MBA (Which I am typing this on!)

I am now having problems with the damned Mountain Lion Update

Thanks for the advice!

Congrats! I'm having the same problem with the ML update as well. I would have suggested the MBA for you too.

MBA. The MBA is actually faster than the MBP for your needs since it has an SSD. And you'll be moving it around often, so no question about it. I'd get it with 8GB of ram since that cannot ever be changed again. The SSD can be changed although it's expensive and replacements are quite specific.
