I'm considering buying the MacBook Pro 13" version (only version I can afford), but I was put off by the small screen size. However, I then came up with the idea of connecting it to my 21" monitor when I'm at home. I do know that the 13" MBP only has integrated graphics so would it be able to cope with the larger monitor?

Yes, if it couldn't cope, they wouldn't have put a useless port on it just for show you know!

Heck, netbooks can drive a 1080p screen no problem, I don't see why the MBP which is much more powerful would have any trouble whatsoever.

Thank you! I'm sorry that I sound so stupid but I've only ever used high powered gaming desktops so I haven't a clue about how such a relatively low powered device would perform.

You have to learn somewhere, might as well be here, we weren't born knowing everything, life would be boring!

Cheers!
