Recently, I was given someone's MBP 15" (early 2008, 2.5ghz, a1260 model) which had the classic nvidia 8800 problem that made the logic board crash. It had not been turned on for a year, so I plugged it in with a 60W adaptor for about 12h (it's the only one I have).
Then I "baked" (http://russell.heistuman.com/2010/04/27/cooking-the-books-or-baking-my-macbook-pro-logic-board/) the logic board and surprinsingly, it worked! It ran like a charm for 2 days, but then it suddenly shut down and I couldn't power it on again.
Now, the only way I can make it work is to remove the battery and the adaptor, press on the power button for 10 seconds, while still holding the button plug in the adaptor, hold it 10 more seconds and then do a normal start. It then boots, but with fans running at their maximum and there's an "X" on the battery even when I put it back in.
I have looked up some issues about the battery, but it seems that people can still boot with the battery plugged in even though it's dead. And I can't do that; the computer won't start when the battery is plugged.
Has anyone ever seen this?
Thanks!
