Hey Guys,

I've loved my MBP so far, but I'm growing scared of it. I've installed extra 4gb ram chip, so my total memory would be 6gb, and it was running fine for the last few weeks. Starting last week I get random crashes, where screen dimms a little, and a wave goes down freezing and telling me I need to power down and restart my computer. What's funny, when I removed 2gb of ram and left it on the 4gb itself, it just did it again costing me 20 minutes of work on my term paper!

I'm really frustrated by this experience. Here are my questions:
1) How can I check what can be the problem?
2) Do you think memory combination causes it?

Below is my report I get on the crash:

I would put it back to it's original configuration (2GB memory) and see if it happens again. If it happens again... your machine is under warrantee and apple will fix it. If it doesn't happen again the 4GB memory is either faulty or you are running some program that is having a problem when it runs in high memory.

Just make sure you back up your stuff.

Thanks for your reply. Well, I'm always backing up. I was just writing my paper, and I guess got unfortunate that it crashed in between "saves".

Is there any way to determine what piece of software can cause this? There's a lot running in the background ( Like Cinch or Adium) but it usually crashes either in Firefox, or Word 2011 ;)

First I would say remove the memory that you have installed. And then check to see if the computer still crashes when the new memory is removed. It seems like that is the only thing that has changed since the computer started crashing. Thats where I would start.

Yeah, it just crashed on me again, so that's what I did. I'll keep you posted if it help.

By any chance did you install any new software? I installed the trial version of Photoshop CS5 last week and that has crashed my iMac several times/day. Sometimes freezing the computer and sometimes having a menu drop down in several languages telling me to hold the button to restart... I think the problem is that the tiny 256MB graphics card can't handle still images. At least when I turned off OpenGL feature yesterday it finally stopped doing that - so far.

It seems strange that after you upgraded the ram it worked fine for a few weeks. I would think that if that was the problem it would have happened sooner.

Use the Activity Monitor to see how much of your system resources it is using. That was how I narrowed down my problem since CS5 is a extreme resource hog. Today it had one core running at 100% in Photoshop for a while but the software was doing absolutely nothing.

Without a register spec it is impossible to know what is happening to cause the kernel panics. Even then it might only point you in a general direction and won't tell you if it is flaky hardware or flaky software.

The secret to getting to the root of these types of problems without the register spec and a knowledge of the inner working of the machines hardware and software is to simplify, simplify, simplify.

You are running a lot of stuff and your machine should be able to handle it no problem... but not running a lot of stuff would eliminate a lot of things as the possible cause.

Looking at the activity monitor is a good idea as previously suggested. Putting the machine in the original state (2GB memory) is a good idea. If after this the machine is still failing a trip to Apple Care might be in order. It's less than one year old, get Apple to make it right.
