Hi all

As you're all aware, Apple generally redesigns their MacBook Pros every 4 years or so:

  • MacBook Pro 2008
  • MacBook Pro Unibody Retina 2012
  • MacBook Pro USB-C 2016
  • MacBook Pro 16" 2020 new Keyboard and thicker?
Therefore my question is, is the 16" MBP considered the new generation of redesign for the next 4 years? I ask because I wish to upgrade my 13" this year, and am wondering whether or not to wait till 2021 for a 'proper' redesign, or if this is it?

Seems to be, would be quite surprised to see them use a design for only a single iteration... there is a rumour of a new screen tech later this year, what if any design alterations that may require is unclear, though. There's also a question of what (if anything) happens with ARM MacBooks around WWDC as a complicating factor, there seem to still be up to six new models of MacBook on the way this year. Assuming there's a like for like replacement for the Air, two types of 13" Pro and 16" Pro that does leave two unaccounted models whose model numbers have been registered.

The forum is far more concerned with dates and anniversaries than Apple is. Routinely expectations are set by the forum based on "Well last year they..." type statements.

I expect a similar 13" with updated keyboard this year, but with changes in screen tech coming soon that may result in other changes.

Ultimately none of us know anyway. Well, some might, but those who do would certainly be under NDA.

I agree, a 13 inch is more likely. The 15.4 inch went to 16, so another half inch on the 13.2 inch screen would only bring it up to 13.8 inches, not enough to call it a 14 inch laptop. They’d have to increase the size even more than the larger model was increased. I don’t see them doing that, since the smaller model is supposed to emphasize portability, and the thermal issues they were trying to solve by making it bigger were more pronounced on the 15 inch models.

Thanks all. I have a work 15" which is honestly a bit heavy/large for what I do, as my job entails me running around with it to developers/designers/meetings/management, so showcasing things on a 15" get's a bit much sometimes. I was willing to use it for another year or so to see what Apple does, but I think I'll go ahead and ask work to get me the new 13" when it launches with the new keyboard

Yes, and the sound. It is a pretty amazing achievement with the new speaker array. So better thermals, better sound, better keyboard and upgrades to all the other components as are available.

Apple really don't seem to be on any schedule here. Just 6 months prior to the 2019 16" they released an updated 2019 15.4", which if you'd pulled the trigger on that imagine would be pretty annoyed... In any case, MacBooks hold their price ok so just buy it if you need it and can always sell when the next thing makes yours look old fashioned.
