My Macbook Pro 16" USB ports suddenly stopped working this morning. I went through Apple's steps of resetting the SMC, but it didn't help. In fact, the computer was reluctant to turn back on afterwards, but finally did after several power button presses. Regardless, it did not fix the issue USB port issue.

Had anyone else had this problem?

One of the ports on the left side of the computer allows for a hard drive to connect. The HD won't connect on the right side ports, though, and none of the ports allow for charging.

I contacted Apple but none of the stores near me have any repair appointments so I had to set-up a mail-in repair. Unfortunately, I use this computer for work, so it's especially important I get it fixed as quickly as possible. I'm also going on a trip soon and definitely need to laptop before then.

My friend suggested finding a local authorized repair center instead, and I noticed Best Buy is an option. They have an appointment available on Saturday. Do you think it would be worth scheduling an appointment, or just wait for the Apple shipping box to arrive and send it in? I'm not familiar with how "good" Best Buy is for repairs or speed, as I've never had to fix an Apple notebook before besides getting a new battery.

Thanks for any help

You're in a tough situation, but I certainly would avoid allowing Best Buy to do repairs on a new MBP 16. When USB ports stop functioning, it could mean problems with the Logic board. Send the machine to Apple and get it repaired right.

Best buy will diagnosis it and then send it in to Apple. Go directly to Apple and avoid the intermediate step and associated delays.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up taking the machine to Best Buy to see what they had to say, and they immediately mailed it off to Apple for repair. At least it saved me from having to wait for the shipping box to arrive from Apple to mail it in, so I saved at least a few days. This really sucks. We'll see what happens.
