MBP 17" (2010) 2.8 Ghz, 4 MB, 500GB, 10.6.8. Problem started a few months back. When trying to wake from sleep by opening lid I just heard a "phew" sound and got a dead Mac. Tried to boot a few times and it did eventually boot up. Then I shut it down and the same thing again. On the multiple attempts it tends to go a little further in the boot stage before I get the "phew" and a black screen again. After maybe 20-30 attempts it eventually boots up.
I have tried literally everything including a new hard drive but the problem persists. If it is left running 24/7 it is fine and runs completely normally but I daren't put it to sleep or shut down. I have had a few suggestions, one being logic board failure but in my experience with electronics in the past, they either work or they don't work. That is to say, once they fail they don't miraculously repair themselves.
Anyone else had this problem? And how did you solve it? And no I don't have Applecare and my nearest Apple genius bar is about 150 miles away!
