Hi All,

Wanted to ask fellow MR-memers if they have had success with addressing the sata-3 6gb/s issues with the 2011 17" MBP. I have anecdotal accounts of some members having good experiences with apple care - whether their MBP was replaced, logic board +sata-cable replacement. Others, have been less fortunate with apple stating that they do not offically support sata-3 and since the issue is with aftersales HDD, they are not obliged to assist.

I, personally feel this is a quality issue affecting apple MBP hardware - thus will be insisting applecare address the issue. After-all, the major reason i sold my 2010 MBP for a 2011 model was for the intel-SB processor, which intel clearly states supports sata-3 throughput.

My dilemma is that i have now just had the 3rd sata-3 SSD i have brought fail:

(1) Crucial c300 (sata2 was fine, but sata-3 was riddles with issues)
(2) Patriot Wildfire: osx SL 10.6.8 - beachball city; shielding the sata cable helped to some extent, sub-sata 2 speeds.

(3) Just copped my vertex 3 today for April 2011 CTO 17" SB MBP
I have the 6/3 set-up (sata-6 HDD; sata-3 in ODD)
Connected ocz ssd as external drive, by usb-sata dock
Clean install lion from usb flash-drive; nil issues
Booted from ocz ssd nil issues.
Installed ocz ssd into hdd slot, smc+pram reset
screen froze on grey screen. Booted from my old ssd to SL - disk utility could not locate the ocz hdd.
Swapped the ocz ssd and the old (owc) ssd back - booted up, flashed the ocz ssd with windows laptop, f/w updated.
placed ocz ssd in optibay - boots to lion without issue.

So it appears that all three sata-3 drives have had issues in my MBP.

I would appreciate feedback from those who had success whilst negotiating with apple re the sata-3 issues.

Johnny
