Anyone compared or care to speculate on performance of the new 17" MBP vs. a 1st gen Dual 2 G5 (in my sig)? I play a ton of World of Warcraft, among other things.

The MBP compares quite well. The graphics are superb and it's a lot faster at some things (Safari, iLife) than the Dual G5. I sold my Quad with a 7800GT card when I got my MBP and haven't look back. I haven't tried some of the high end Mac games I had on the Quad, just some Windows games and I'm extremely impressed. Quake 4 runs especially well in OSX on the MBP.

This should give you an idea:

Summary:

Its a comparison on running on java apps between an MBP and a dual G5.

It takes 32 seconds on MBP, 50 seconds on G5.

Not sure as if this is just a java specific performance difference, but I would say overall they feel about the same speed, as opposed to my old 1.67ghz PB that felt much slower. Some apps that go through Rossetta like Photoshop will be noticeably slower on MBP than on a dual G5, until they are updated with a UB.
