On the phone Apple tells me they can upgrade me from 10.6.8 to El Cap for free. I spent 4 hours at the local Apple store on one occasion and 5 hours the second time. No one at the Genius Bar could get the job done. So I phone Apple again and speak to a senior advisor. He is confident it will work and proposes to do it over the internet. While El Cap is being downloaded he asks if I can call again once the D/L is complete. That way he doesn't have to stay on the line 30 minutes. I agree. When I call back later another SA tells me that that my Intel Core 2 Duo cannot be upgraded beyond Lion. Has anyone successfully installed an OSX beyond Lion on a 2006 MBP?

I’m very surprised that anyone from Apple would even try and do it. Isn’t your machine unsupported for El Capitan?

Apple won’t help you install El Capitan on that unless it’s a late 2007 17” I believe. There are third party tools like MacPostFactor that I’ve had no success with. I stick with MLPostFactor personally.

Pretty sad in terms of service from Apple. The first 5 'experts' tell me they can upgrade me to El Cap, including a Senior Advisor. It's only the 6th expert I speak to who gives me bad, but accurate news.

The problem is a lot of people who work in the newer Apple Store will likely have never even used a Mac from that time period (forget PowerPC). And we know how people like to pretend they know when they don't know.

It's not that reasonable to expect Apple support to be supporting an upgrade on a 12-14 year old computer. Why even waste the effort to suddenly upgrade now when it wasn't important all those prior years?

Try even getting a response at all from another manufacturer about their 2006 product. 14 years is a long time in computer years.

Honestly tho if you don't have another computer, you can score a comparably cutting edge Late 2013 15" for like $600 on eBay that will run all the latest OSes and keep up with the newest machines for everyday tasks.
