I have a new M1Max 14 inch MBP with a 4TB SSD. In watching some of the teardown videos of the new Mac Studio some mentions were made that the current MBP also had the same 2 SSD slots as seen in the new Studio and it was speculated that the MBP SSD's over 2 TB were actually using 2 devices, presumably in some sort of RAID design, to obtain the 4TB level of storage.

So, since I am too chicken to open my MBP, the question begs: Is it a single 4TB SSD or a combination of 2 SSD's? Disk Utility doesn't show separate devices but how all that works is beyond my skill level.

The SSD is soldered to the logicboard. If you look at the photo from an iFixit teardown. There are blank spaces where more NAND would fit. So, I'd assume the higher capacity models place extra chips on the logicboard.

Also the slots on the Mac Studio are just for the memory portion of an SSD. The controller portion is built into the separate T2 chip. The main difference with the Mac Studio is the memory may be added after the motherboard is made.

Modified example from iFixit teardown.

It's one SSD drive.

The 14/16-inch MacBook Pro has 8 pads on the logic board for NAND chips. This allows the board to accommodate different storage options. The base 512GB will have four 128GB chips, for example.

Thanks! I thought I heard the youtubers say the MBP had the same type slots as the Studio, I either heard that wrong or they were.
