It may need a new hard drive, have failing RAM or battery problems or even have a failing logic board it is impossible to tell from this description but at 9 years old it's not worth fixing either.
 
Thanks for that. Wasn't thinking on spending money on it, so for the moment try to keep it plugged in all the time and not shut down - so far, so good...

So, about to pack in?
 
Yeahhh you should consider spending some money on an SSD if you want to keep it going, and do a backup if you haven't already.
 
Two Christmases back, I upgraded a 17" MBP without issue. Used a Crucial SSD (500GB) and upped the unit to 6GB of memory. It is not hard and there are YouTube videos to help with disassembly/reassembly. It was much faster after that.
