I have a cable that goes from miniDP to HDMI. Connected with it my MBP mid 2009 13" to a projector, no image is trasmitted. But when I unconnect the cable, the image on the MBP (that was ok all the time) goes black.
OS is El Capitan and the projector is not recognised automaticall, nor do I find it in the settings either at the monitors or the desktops.

Before I invest more time, is it supposed to get the video signal (audio I can feed separately) from the miniDP connector of the MBP2009 to apparatus (projector, TV, etc.) with HDMI input or does this work only by using the miniDVI of the MBP?

It is supposed to transmit video signal from the mDP port.
External displays not recognized is not a rare issue, both on Mac & Windows PCs.

Just for the record, the cable did not make a good contact with the projector. Afert waggling it now runs perfectly.
